TEAMS involved in a thorough archaeological survey of the Forest of Dean are set to come to a parish near you in the very near future.

The survey, which started in January, has come about following a study by English Heritage which highlighted the fact that the Forest had never had the same attention as the rest of the county in archaeological terms.

The whole survey is expected to run for the next two years but teams are already involved in groundwork and are anxious that people with local knowledge will be able to help them pinpoint interesting sites.

Ultimately all parishes in the Dean will be covered but a start is being made this week at Woolaston, Alvington, Lydney, Awre and Longhope/Blaisdon.

"Local knowledge is vitally important in a task such as this and local people can play an important role in discovering the history of their area," said Jasper Blake of the Dean Archaeology Group.
