I don't normally travel to Gloucester when travelling to work but this morning I was on a business trip to the other side of Oxford which took me through Gloucester.

I hit a traffic queue way before the Highnam roundabout travelling from the direction of Huntley. It wasn't until the Gloucester bypass that the traffic flow went back to normal. This took me 40 minutes crawling along at a snail's pace. I am aware that this is the situation that drivers have to suffer every morning on their daily commute out of the Forest to either Gloucester or Cheltenham.

What I cannot understand is why the 'third' lane (which was created some five or so years ago with much disruption) cannot be opened up to 'any' vehicle during certain times – say 8am to 8.30am to allow a better traffic flow. This 'third' lane is allocated for buses, taxis and motorcyclists. I noticed when in the traffic this morning that many motorcyclists weave their way easily through the traffic and then when they reach the 'third' lane they are able to travel as normal to their destination. Also I saw very few buses and taxis during my tortuous 40 minutes.

I, for one, would not relish the thought of having to sit in that traffic day in day out in order to get to my place of work. But maybe the commuters could help themselves a little. I was surprised by the number of vehicles with just the driver and no passengers in the vehicle. Surely there is a way that regular drivers could get together in some way and organise some car sharing which would not only save them money, but also alleviate this daily chaos. I would suggest that maybe someone could create a Facebook page for the Forest commuters where people could connect with other drivers who need to be in Gloucester/Cheltenham at the same time and leave at a similar time and organise a 'car sharing community'.

I do feel for all you drivers out there who have to suffer this awful traffic every day and feel that there must be something which can be done to help.
