PARALYMPIC gold medallist Andy Lewis visited Yorkley School recently, to tell pupils more about his triathlon success.

Teaching assistant Kate Fyffe said: “The children were very interested to learn more about this local man who achieved such a lot at Rio in 2016.

“His gold medal was for the triathlon – probably the most difficult event for an amputee as swimming, running and cycling all involve a different prosthetic limb. Pupils heard that, when he was 16 years old, a traffic accident involving a lorry damaged Andy’s leg so severely that he eventually had to make the difficult decision to have it amputated.

“Since then, Andy has done many amazing things – he has built a plane and holds a   pilot’s licence, and is now married with children.

“Andy visited each class and every child and adult held his gold medal for a moment, discovering that it was surprisingly heavy. We also found out that it rattles, with a different sound for gold, silver and bronze, so that visually impaired people can distinguish between them.”
