A SONG about a Victoria Cross winner has proved a surprise hit for a local composer.
Tony Davis, front man of Forest ceilidh band Banshee, made the top 20 in a Scottish chart, with his composition Angus Buchanan, named after the Coleford First World War hero.
The tune was selected by a panel led by famous musician Simon Thoumire for Scotland’s Music Hub as one of the top 20 compositions for 2018.
Another of Tony’s tunes called Granny’s Green Steps received similar acclaim.
“I am absolutely delighted with this recognition,” said Tony. “It’s wonderful link between the Forest and Scotland’s music scene.”
Tony has written many songs and tunes about the Forest of Dean, such as Forest Gold, that was sung by the Forest Male Voice Choir for many years.
He also wrote a musical about actress Sarah Siddons, who was reputedly brought up in Lydbrook, that was performed at the Forest Theatre by the Lydbrook Players.
More recently, songs like Vorest Lad and I wish I could go skinny dipping are being enjoyed at their performances.
Tony also writes dances with music for Banshee, including The Forest Stomp and Lady Skimmingtons which can be found on Banshee’s youtube channel bansheeceilidhband.
Banshee will be playing Angus Buchanan live on Radio Winchcombe 107.1 FM live next Monday, April 8, on the Folk Show with Kevin O, where they are responding to Kevin’s challenge to compose a song to a title of his choosing.
