THIS was an unexpected result – a victory for experience over youth as the veterans of Blakeney huffed and puffed their way into the semi-finals and a tie over two legs against Redmarley.
Blakeney's David Price explained: "I don't think they went up the Hill with a lot of confidence. Viney have been blazing a trail in their league. They have a good young side and would have been the favourites to win."
But this was a day for the 40 plussers!
Price admitted: "We have a job to get a settled team. We keep losing youngsters so we have to play a lot of veterans. Many of the team are now 40 and even older but to their credit they keep turning up..
"On the day it was a victory for experience. The defence played really well and Craig Scott, our leading scorer, was on target with two more."
Fifth from the foot of North Gloucester League Three, Blakeney had anticipated a real struggle and the game was often on a knife edge. For long periods play was evenly balanced.
Early goals by Brian Morgan and Gary Ballinger gave Blakeney a 2 - 1 half-time advantage and victory was cemented in the second-half when Craig Scott scored twice.
Is extra training scheduled for the cup semi-final?
"We recently lost by an odd goal to Redmarley so that should be the incentive. I'm sure we will be relying on experience to see us through," said Price.
