A DVD player and a crowbar were among the items fished out of the River Lyd by a group of volunteers.
The 10 volunteers collected a total of 24 bags of rubbish from the river behind the Lydney Co-op.
The clean-up was organised by the Co-op along with the Wild Trout Trust, the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust and the Resilience Centre, Woolaston.
The environmental group is working with the Co-op to develop a scheme to generate electricity from the river to power the store.
Sue Clarke of the Resilience Centre said: "It is an opportunity to smarten up the river and learn about the potential of the river for renewable energy generation and finding out its natural ecology."
