A CAMPAIGN to make Chepstow a "Walkers are Welcome" town is gathering pace.

Walkers are Welcome is a community-led initiative which includes 75 towns and villages across Britain.

A group has been set up in Chepstow and they are seeking support from local people to getting Walkers are Welcome status for the town.

Chair of the group Paul Gowen said: "To get Walkers are Welcome status we have to show there is broad community support.

"We are looking to get about 600 signatures on a petition and we will be outside the Gatehouse in High Street on Saturday (March 31) from 10am until 3pm.

"Chepstow has a lot to offer walkers with the Offa's Dyke path, the Wye Valley Walk and the Wales Coastal Path all coming through Chepstow and we are not far from the Gloucestershire Way.

"We're hoping that we can get Walkers are Welcome accreditation before the official opening of the Wales Coastal Path on May 5."
