THERE was a frightful scene in a quiet Forest street as zombies, vampires, spirits and witches took over the entire estate.
Thankfully, it was for one night only, as families and children turned the whole of their close into ‘Devil Gate Drive’ for Hallow’een.
There was even a giant black curtain across the entrance to Broadwell’s Lewis Glade, which opened onto a ghoulish and ghostly world of devilishly decorated houses and gardens.
Tombstones littered lawns, coffins gave up their dead and pumpkin latterns glowed as bats hovered menacingly and spiders span their infernal webs.
But never fear – it was all great fun, as the Lewis Glade’s children went trick and treating and invited the neighbourhood round to their wicked world.
Mum-of-two Kelly Burson, who helped organise the Hallow’een event, said: “The whole street looked amazing and the night was absolutely brilliant.
“We’re just a little council estate, but it shows what you can do when neighbours all pull together like this.
“We thought we’d do it for the kids and decorated 14 houses – all with a different Hallow’een theme – and the children all dressed up in their favourite fancy dress horror costumes.
“It took six weeks to come up with the ideas and get the work done, and three days to put everything up, and when we saw it finished it was just so real. It was incredible.
“People were going home with homework to make everything, while all the kids have been out in the woods gathering sticks and leaves to use. Everyone worked so hard.
“Loads of people from the neighbourhood came to look, and with the night lit up by pumpkin lanterns and torches, they couldn’t believe it.”
The devil was certainly in the detail on the ‘night of the living dead’ as homes were ingeniously transformed into houses of horror last Wednesday (October 31), with a vampire’s castle, a spooky church, a witches’ coven, a pumpkin pad, a toxic dump, a spine tingling spider’s web and a ghosts’ haunt among the demonic designs.
Zombies walked abroad through the graveyard, skeletons rose from the dead and Grim Reapers cut a swathe through the neighbourhood, as youngsters screamed in joy in their fantastically freaky costumes and supped up chicken nuggets, chips, cakes and toffee apples.
“The kids just loved it, they couldn’t wait for us to finish it all,” added Kelly.
“There are some really talented people in our street, who have worked so hard to bring this to life and they did the kids proud. It looked just like a horror film set.
“My youngest son Rio, who is a teenager, thought it was so wicked he invited his friends round.”
Neighbour Leanne Holder added: “All the residents came together and decorated the entire street ready for Hallow’een. They have done such a fantastic job for the kids and they deserve so much recognition.”
