AS we reflect on the recent petrol crisis, our political leaders will no doubt be congratulating themselves on a job well done – facing down the vicious (and where's the evidence?) farmers and hauliers so decisively.

But at what cost? How much did it cost for the police presence, the use of our armed forces? More to the point, who is going to pay for them? Surely overkill in the extreme.

All that is wanted is a fair reduction in the taxes which we are forced to pay in order to keep government policies alive and on course. Were the government to levy value added tax on the actual price of fuel and not on fuel plus tax, that would go a long way towards solving the problem. Is that too much to ask?

I fail to see what 'value' is obtained by the motorist on VAT on tax – a tax on a tax!

As a member of the public, I fully support and will continue to support the peaceful actions of the common man, and look forward to a second round in November, and perhaps another "Labour inspired" winter of discontent.

Merry Christmas Tony Blair. Rest in Peace New Labour! – "Foxy." Name and address supplied.
