POLICE have put a call out for witnesses to a collision between two cars at a notorious accident blackspot which has left a 78-year-old Lydney man fighting for his life.

The collision, at the junction from Highfield Hill onto the A48 – the scene of a number of serious accidents – happened at around 1.05pm last Thursday (September 29).

A white Ford Escort Estate driven by a 69-year-old woman from Lydney, collided with a silver Rover 414 driven by a 78-year-old man, also from Lydney, at the junction. It led to the complete closure of the bypass – the main route through the Forest – from around 1.30pm until 6pm.

Both drivers and a 70-year-old woman passenger in the Ford had to be cut free from their mangled cars and debris and oil was strewn across both lanes of the bypass.

The Lydney man driving the Rover was taken to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol suffering 'life threatening' pelvis injuries.

The woman driving the Ford and her passenger were taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital suffering broken bones.

•Anyone who witnessed the collision but has not spoken to police should call the new non-emergency number 101, quoting incident 218 of September 29.
