FENCING to protect pedestrians from the dangers of traffic on the Wye road bridge at Chepstow have been put in place.

It follows a campaign that has been run for several years to have the fencing installed, amid fears that a wayward vehicle could mount the pavement, with potentially catastrophic results, especially since the bridge is used by many students from Wyedean School.

Deputy headteacher of Wyedean School, Rob Wagland, commented: “Students at Wyedean have been celebrating the advent of safety fencing across The Wye Bridge linking Chepstow to Wyedean School.

“Eliza Quinn, Tilly Clarke Roberts, Zak Fryer and Morgan Amor, along with many other students and parents, are very pleased to see this latest development on a path that lots of students tread every school day.

“Two years ago, students, governors, staff and parents from Wyedean School successfully campaigned for a reduction in the speed limit across the bridge. Now the crossing has been made even safer.”

•The Old Wye Bridge between Tutshill and Chepstow re-opened on Monday afternoon (December 21), three months later than planned - due to technical problems that slowed the work.

The iconic iron bridge will be the subject of celebrations next year, as it reaches its bicentenary.
