A TOP Wyedean hotel has been put on the market for £1.4m owing to challenging "economic circumstances".

The 350-year-old Lindors country house hotel near St Briavels is run by the Christian Guild, a tourism arm of the Methodist Church.

It includes 23 ensuite bedrooms and five lodges, plus a reception hall, bar and sun lounges, a 64-seat restaurant and conference rooms that can accommodate up to 110 guests.

Membership of the leisure club and indoor swimming pool are open to local residents, while the 24-acre site includes a tennis court, croquet and putting facilities, and landscaped gardens filled with streams, waterfalls and lakes surrounded by woodland.

Selling agents Musson Liggins and Savills said the house, which stands above the River Wye, was originally constructed in 1660 and extended in the 1830s.

It is one of two being sold by the Christian Guild alongside Abbot Hall Hotel in Cumbria.

In a statement, the guild said: “The continued uncertain economic circumstances together with the continuing poor overall financial performance of the company have led the board to undertake a strategic review of the company and its hotel operations.

“It is with great regret that the board has agreed to sell Lindors Country House Hotel and Abbot Hall Hotel.

“They will be advertised as going concerns, and there is every hope that they will be acquired as such and that the staff will transfer to new owners."

The mainly churchgoing staff have been told through face to face briefings.

Tom Cunningham, hotels team director at Savills, said: “We are delighted to have been appointed to sell these two historic hotels.

“Both are located in popular tourist destinations and benefit from a strong business and tourist trade, making them attractive to a range of prospective buyers.”
