THERE has recently been much coverage about the amount of miles that food in the West has to travel before it reaches our local stores. Some of the more ridiculous examples see Cornish clotted cream travel almost 350 miles around the West before finding its way back to local Cornish shelves.
This is a crazy situation which is completely avoidable. The impact on the environment, C02 and also the impact on the quality of the product which consumers receive is entirely unnecessary.
I would welcome suggestions from readers on their solutions to this problem. In turn, later this year, I will question the European Commission about this matter to see if there is something we can do to reduce or stop the unnecessary food miles in our region.
