A neglected and damaged century old roadside marker has been carefully restored and replaced by the Forestry Commission.

The cast iron plaque is once again alongside Ellwood Road at Milkwall, near Coleford. It informs motorists they are travelling on a road made up and surfaced by the Crown.

The plaques were originally erected in pairs on Crown roads throughout the Forest.

The pair at Ellwood were found damaged and uprooted.

Cleaned and repaired by PJ Engineering, they have now been re-positioned as part of a project being overseen by the Commission's David Clark and Glynn Bullock.

Deputy Surveyor Kevin Stallard said: "As guardians of the Forest we are pleased to see these lovely pieces of history renovated and back in the ground. This is just a small part of our programme to protect the history and heritage of the Forest."
