A cage baited with the head of a deer and the mangled carcasses of two foxes...

Both these discoveries, pictured by a Review reader, were made in the Forest of Dean recently. And, he asks: "What on earth is going on?"

The head of the deer was found in a cage, presumed to be a trap, at the Three Brothers landmark in the heart of the Forest.

The slaughtered foxes were found on the roadside verge between New Fancy and The Speech House last Friday. The finder had seen a panel van parked nearby the previous evening and believes there may be a connection.

"From its injuries it looked as though at least one of the foxes had been hunted by dogs. It appeared to me that dumping the foxes was just a way of getting rid of the evidence," he said.

A greater mystery surrounds the deer head. Shortly after the picture was taken the cage and its content was removed.

The man is asking Forest users to be vigilant and aware of what is going on around them and to report anything suspicious to the police or The Forestry Commission.
