OUR thanks go to Keith Wilks for this lovely photo of a picnic at Sallowvallets Lodge taken more than 90 years ago.
In the crisp photo from left to right: an unknown lady, Mrs F N Jones who is blurred because she moved when the photo was taken (this was before the days of instantaneous photos and plates took time to expose, so you needed to sit still). Then young Ronald Wilks, Keith's brother, who was killed in 1941 when the Armed Merchant Cruiser Rajputana was torpedoed on April 13, 1941 by U-Boat 108 west of Reykjavik, Iceland. He left a three year old daughter. Then Mrs Ellen Wilks, Mr Tim Vaughan, Keith's grandfather, young Harold Wilks (now 95 and living in Leceistershire), Sergeant G Wilks, Keith's father, who served in the Lydney police force and was treasurer of the town's rugby club. By him, and smiling broadly, Sid Jones, then F N Jones, a well-known photographer with a studio in Gloucester Road, Coleford. To his left his daughter, Clarice Jones and two unknown gents.
