PARKEND'S wonderful (as usual) Carnival was a bonus event for the Forest Furry Friends and a Frog, who drove off with the £250 heavy vehicle float first prize.

Their efforts go directly to support the Friends of the Dilke Hospital, which is part of the whole aim of the carnival to support local causes from the gate takings, stall rents and refreshments money.

And despite clouds there were crowds – organiser Geraldine Brown said the event was at least the equal of last year's spectacular and so far the gate takings alone amounted to about £4,500.

"We had four bands this year, including Bristol Army Cadets and Gloucester Sea Cadets, who helped things go with a swing, added to local musicians and the Emeralds," she said.

Run in conjenction with the carnival, the village's annual Flower and Vegetable Show had a brilliant year, with 302 entries.

"Most of the classes were well supported, but lacking a bit in the under-7 classes and flower arrangement," said a spokesman.

Organisers Sue and Bill Brand said they were really impressed by the standard of entries and very pleased with the continued support of the exhibitors.

Again the Men and Boys Cake Class caused some village masculine rivalry, as did the collection of five vegetables.

There was a stunning array of flowers and cooking and the spectators were not disappointed.

Best Bloom went to June Gazzard for her beautiful Gladioli and Best in Show to Tracy Virgo for her skilful cross-stitch of an Eddie Stobart Lorry.
