THE festive season got off to a great start with the switching-on of the Christmas lights in Ross-on-Wye on Saturday.

Several hundred people gathered around the Market House to see the lighting up of the Ross Rotary Club sponsored Christmas tree, performed by Wincey Willis and the Mayor of Ross-on-Wye, Cllr David Ravenscroft.

Crowds were entertained by the Salvation Army Band, Ross Town Band and local band 'Splinter' and cartoon characters Ben 10 and Peppa Pig made an unexpected appearance. If you missed them they'll be back again on Sunday (December 4).

Sunday is also the date for the Ross-on-Wye Christmas Shopping Festival, another event organised by the Association of Ross Traders – putting true tradition back into Christmas with Father Christmas in his Grotto, food and craft stalls, brass bands, choirs, in-store offers and promotions, entertainment and lots of fun for all (10am – 4pm). Herefordshire Council-run town centre parking will be free.

The Phoenix Theatre has a special matinee screening of White Christmas at 3pm.
