ACTUALLY that should be 270,000 stitches after a group of residents and staff at a sheltered housing complex spent nearly five weeks creating it.

The scarf, created by residents and staff of Goode Court in Lydney, was taken to St Mary’s Church in Lydney where it stretched the entire length of the building and almost finished on the road outside.

The finished article was unrolled after the service at St Mary’s Church by two young members, Tim Summerfield and Sophia Fenby.

It stretched from the high altar, along the aisle, through the west door, through the churchyard and almost made it onto Church Road.

The sponsored knit was the idea of Iris Preece who suggested it after Nina Summerfield spoke to residents about the church’s gift appeal project.

Goode Court manager, Carole Cousins, said: “The scarf is 125ft long, 2,150 rows and approximately 270,000 stitches.

“Most of the wool was kindly donated by parishioners of St Mary’s.

“The scarf was made in six foot lengths so it can be made into blankets and given to charity.”

The knitters were Roselle George, Iris Preece, Una Wildin, Joan Brain, Irene Davis, Phyllis Slater, Lynne Greig, Pat Nicholson and Carole Cousins.
