TRIBUTES have been paid to a former captain of Lydney Rugby Club who died earlier this month.
David Hughes, who was 90, was skipper of the club for two seasons and also played for a West of England XV against South Africa.
Mr Hughes played at outside half and made his first appearance for the club in 1941. He went on to be captain in the 1948-49 and 1952-53 seasons.
A tribute to Mr Hughes appeared in the programme for Lydney's game last Saturday against Henley.
The two surviving members of the 1941 side, Keith Wilks and Esmond Tovey, were in the crowd at the game.
Mr Wilks said: "David was a very talented footballer and was very much admired."
