OCTOBER 20 – Apple Day – is usually a big event at the Dean Heritage Museum, Soudley, but this year it also marks another big occasion.
For following the last major event of the year – a big family treat with tons to see and do – the museum will be shutting down at the end of half-term for a half-million pound refurbishment.
Director Kate Biggs said: "This rich harvest for Apple Day is about celebrating the wealth of traditional orchards, cider-making and the crafts that are part of our heritage. It's also about our achievements and the launch of the new-look Dean Heritage Centre.
"Apple Day is our celebration of all that we have achieved over the last few years.
"We have created new jobs on projects funded by the Heritage Lottery, SW Regional development Agency, the Countryside Agency, the Coalfields regeneration Trust and the Summerfield Trust.
"We'd like to say a big thankyou to all our volunteers, suppliers and supporters. It would not be possible to run the centre without their help."
On Apple Day cider will be made on a traditional press, and Stan White from Blakeney will be operating his "scratter". Local Minchew cider and hand-pressed juice can be tried and there will also be Freeminer beer, Old Spot pork and locally made cheeses.
"We are closing on a high note and are very excited about the new-look museum opening next year and the new opportunities it will provide for everyone," added Kate.
