LONGHOPE Church was the centre of a weekend of events to remember the men who fought in the Battle of the Somme 100 years ago.
A commemorative service which included a Royal British Legion bugler and readings was held on Sunday morning
Over the weekend there was an exhibition that included a ’cascade’ of knitted and painted poppies, photos, and artwork by children of Hope Brook Primary School.
There was also a concert on Saturday evening at the Latchen Rooms featuring Tina Coull who sang a selection of songs from the First World War.
The exhibition was organised by Jo Phelps who published a book about the village’s war memorial and the men who did not return from the war.
She said: “There were 10 men from Longhope who were killed in the Battle of the Somme and we’ve put together this exhibition to remember them.
“I spent a lot of time researching the men on the war memorial and they feel very real to me.”
