A TEAM of 11 students at Gloucestershire College raised around £250 for the Pied Piper Appeal during a five-mile sponsored wheelchair walk.
The 16 and 17 year-olds at the Five Acres campus walked on crutches and were pushed around in wheelchairs around the running track at the Five Acres campus.
The walk was part of the National Citizen Service (NCS) which gives 15 to 17 year-olds the chance to discover their potential, build skills for the future and make their mark in their community.
The team were particularly inspired by the work of the Pied Piper Appeal, based at Gloucester Royal Hospital, who aims to transform the lives of sick and disabled children in the county. They also have close links to Heart of The Forest School where they have donated funds to replace well needed minibuses.
They organised a sponsored wheelchair walk where they dressed up in fancy ‘wounded’ dress with all manner of fake blood, slings and bandages. Individuals walked on crutches and pushed each other round on wheelchairs.
Student Abbie Toomer said: “It was a challenge but we pulled together as a team and raised awareness for a good cause.”
The team put together a cake sale for the staff and students of Lakers School and Gloucestershire College where individuals flocked to the stand to grab a sweet treat, cheer on the wheeling walkers and donate money to a worthy cause.
The cake sale raised £92 and the team managed to secure more donations from friends and family for doing the walk.
