BERRY Hill community orchard is one of seven projects to be recognised for their outstanding contribution to the environment and community.

The orchard received one of the Campaign to Protect Rural England’s Gloucestershire awards which were presented at a special event at the Gambier Parry Hall at Highnam on Tuesday.

Volunteers at Berry Hill have transformed an area of waste ground into an imaginative, new green space for community use.

Paths have been laid out with benches, and varieties of Gloucestershire fruit trees and fruit bushes planted. Biodiversity is enhanced through bird and bat boxes and ground cover planting. The area is already well used by groups such as the local primary school and the scouts.
