AFTER a year of closure the little road between Newland and Redbrook still remains barred to traffic – but relief is on the way.

"The reason we closed it was because of two landslips, quite extensive, which we were hoping to tackle once the ground dried out," said district surveyor Robin Peacey.

"They started in the heavy rains at the end of last year and did look quite threatening.

"However, we are now hoping to make a start on the work in a few weeks, maybe sooner – it's ironic that the rain has just started again! It always seems to be the way."

The road has had a history of troubles and closures since the listed old skew bridge which spans it started dropping bricks a few years ago – it was also shut down then, said Mr Peacey.

"We had to close it while the Forestry Commission, which owns it, decided what to do. It's not as if anything much goes over it – there's no railway, only a footpath.

"But is was quite a worry in its time. In the end they repaired the facing."
