I WAS horrified to read the small article which referred to an alleged 'Honour' charge in the Review (June 10, 2011).
I attended a conference last year on this very issue including forced marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM).
Surprisingly or perhaps not so, the above are not uncommon in Gloucester and the police take the matter seriously with systems in place to combat all three. There is a high reate of domestic violence within society without the addition of any other form of abuse of women and men since forced marriage affects both!
It is heart-breaking when the UK welcomes people from other cultures who will not adapt to the rule of law here. Its citizens have to.
Thank-you for printing it. We need to know, one of our children could become a girl or boyfriend of someone from a background where such customs as forced marriage, honour killing and FGM are the norm. Make no mistake they too may well face the wrath of those upholding their perceived retribution.
