A DEBATE over the voluntary identification of River Wye craft, including canoes and pleasure boats, is being sought by the Environment Agency.

The Agency says an identification scheme would promote safety and protect the environment – and it wants the views on the scheme of Wyeside folk and especially river-users.

It says it would like anglers, boaters, local businesses and communities, to get involved and offer their opinions.

"The proposed voluntary scheme will be cheaper than full-scale registration. It will also enable the Agency to make sure that byelaws designed to protect people and wildlife are followed," it says.

"A voluntary scheme would also mean that boat users and commercial boat businesses would  not need to pay a yearly charge to administer a formal registration."

Lynn Bulbeck, leading on the consultation for Environment Agency Wales, said: "The Wye is a fantastic river that supports not only a huge range of wildlife, but it is a vital part of the economy in this area. It draws visitors from far and wide to take part in a range of activities.

"What we have to make sure is that those that use the river follow the byelaws that are in place on the river. They play an important role in terms of safety and in protecting the environment that everyone enjoys.

"The voluntary boat identification scheme we are proposing will mean a better way of regulation without the need for red-tape and costs that would effect businesses in this tough economic climate."
