AN AMBULANCE crew called the fire brigade when they thought their vehicle was on fire.

The vehicle was taking a patient from the Grey Hill surgery in Caldicot to the Royal Gwent Hospital when the crew became aware of smoke coming from it.

The incident happened on Newport Road near the junction with Dewstow Road around lunchtime last Wednesday (November 27).

The ambulance was not on fire but there was excessive smoke coming from it.

A spokeswoman for the Welsh Ambulance Service said the vehicle was taken off the road for a precautionary inspection but was replaced with another ambulance.

Newport Road was closed for a short time with traffic diverted around local streets.
