FOR many years I've stayed with friends at Newnham on Severn. It has always been a delightful palce to visit with its quintessential customs and ways of life.
However, my recent visit has left me with a feeling of shock. I have never seen Newnham look so shabby. Wherever you go there is an attitude of neglect and decay – the daffodils were over some weeks ago but the Chains are not mowed, the state of the burial ground is appalling, the children's play park and surrounding area is degenerating. There seems to be an aura of disinterest thoughout the whole village.
Two years ago I mentioned that Newnham had never looked so good. From what I understand there was a female chairman at that time, who was undoubtedly very keen and highly efficient because the whole village felt vibrant. I am sadly aware that she is no longer in office. To put it bluntly, she should be.
