On June 24, I wrote to Mark Harper asking the objective of our military involvement in Libya.

A month later and we are still acting on behalf of one side in a civil war, whilst falsely claiming to be protecting civilians.

At a time of austerity, with the economy stagnant, there is still unlimited funding to bomb a sovereign state.

Now, even the French are having second thoughts, whilst the Americans were only ever lukewarm about involvement in the first place.

The truth is that Cameron, with the support of the other two main parties, has got us into an intractable mess. Gaddafi may cling on, but even if he does go, we will inherit responsibility for the chaos and possible civil conflict that will follow.

In the meantime, like in Afghanistan, we the poor taxpayers continue to pay for the politicians' vanity.
