A PROJECT to build a seagoing skiff rowing boat is looking for boat builders to launch the construction.

The Lydney Skiff Project (LSP) has purchased the basic kit to build a four-man rowing boat with cox and wants volunteers to help.

Anyone who would like to get involved – experience not essential – can attend a meeting at Lydney Town Hall next Wednesday, May 3.

The project aims to start group rowing on Lydney Canal and the River Severn, where rowing was a way of life in the 1800s.

Ahead of the meeting, Foresters were able to get a sneak preview of what the boat will look like at last Sunday’s (April 23) Forest Activities Festival, when the Zandenise community-built skiff from Worcester made an appearance.

The LSP aims to launch its own 22-ft long skiff later this year on the one-mile canal, which dates back two centuries to 1813, and was re-opened in 2005 after a two-year project of restoration and enhancement.

It will also be suitable for off-shore rowing and entering competitions and galas.

Project chair Sue Llewellyn said: “In just over a year we have had nearly 100 people say they are interested in joining us.

“Some are keen to row, some to build and some to do both. We hope everyone will be able to enjoy taking part throughout the project.”

LSP has the basic construction kit for the boat, and intends to source all other materials locally.

“The idea is that all local people – from retired carpenters and joiners who want to share their expertise, to people wanting perhaps to expand their hobby and youngsters keen to learn new skills – will be welcome,” added Sue.

“It doesn’t matter if you have done nothing like this before – we will have experienced boat builders and other experts on hand to support everyone in developing their skills.”

The St Ayles skiff design is based on rowing boats used in the last century for fishing and competitions in Scottish coastal waters. Such skiffs are now established in more than 220 communities around the world.

Next Wednesday’s boat builders’ event starts at 7.30pm in the town hall bar, and will feature a talk by an experienced boat builder, videos of skiffs in action and a look at the building plans.

Last year, the Forest of Dean District Council approved a £2,000 grant for the LSP which also received £400 from Newnham Film Club.
