POP duo SD*Jem paid a visit to The Dean Academy as part of their campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of drugs.

Band members Denis and Shanel Jemal, who recently supported The Saturdays, performed a selection of their songs, and spoke to Year Eight students about how they have seen first-hand the effects and consequences of taking drugs.

Shanel said: "Working in the music industry I have seen how drugs have ruined careers and people I know have died. We feel that it is important to raise awareness so that people can make the right decisions. Keep healthy and safe and don't make decisions based on other people. If you take drugs you are putting your life at risk."

Students Ellie Ovens and Lily Matthews commented that they found the assembly "really exciting, fun and informative."

Mrs Janice Hutton, college manager at the academy, said: "In addition to their performance and talk there was a signing and autograph session for the students. The format works so well; it's a great way to deliver their message."

Principal Mr David Gaston added: "We are very grateful to Shanel and Denis for taking time out of their busy schedule to share this very important message with our students. Tackling the issue of drugs is a huge responsibility for schools and our message is far more likely to be heard and respected when it is delivered by our children's' contemporaries using music and dance."
