FINGERS crossed for the flood waters to subside by mid-January. If not, there are fears that the first major Severn tides of the New Year could add substantially to the present chaos.

Over a four day period from January 12 to 15 the predictions are for the tides to reach a maximum of 9.8 metres (32ft 2in) on the Sharpness scale.

The highest tides of the year are predicted for August and, in total, there are over 50 days on which the tides are predicted to achieve 9 metres (29ft 5ins) – large enough to provide good bores.

The highest tide, 10.1 metres, is predicted for August 22, the day following a full moon.

However, river watchers will be keenly watching the January tides and the impact they could have on the already swollen system.

The following predications are for Newnham. Add on an hour for Minsterworth.

Saturday, January 12: 0704 (9.5) and 1930 (9.3); Sunday, January 13: 0750 (9.8) and 2015 (9.6); Monday, January 14: 0834 (9.8) and 2057 (9.5); Tuesday, January 15: 0914 (9.6) and 2135 (9.0).
