CHURCH leaders in the Forest say they are very are pleased at the record numbers of people attending Holy Week services.

"A marvellous 522 people attended services at Drybrook, Lydbrook and Ruardean churches during Holy Week. This included a record 354 adults and children at services on Easter Day itself," said Rev Nick Bromfield.

"We are thrilled that so many people took part in our Easter events and services, showing that in the Forest people are hungry to come to church and participate in the greatest story ever told.

"The dedication of those who decorated the churches also shows how deep the faith is here in the Forest."

This year saw a range of services to choose from including the revived ancient Tenebrae – or 'Service of the Shadows' – services on Maundy Thursday, where the church begins in light and ends in near darkness, with the loud banging of the church door representing the sealing of Christ's tomb, to Easter egg hunts for the children and a special Easter Day breakfast for over 40 people.

The now traditional walk with the Cross in Mr Bronmfield's parishes was from Lydbrook to Drybrook and attracted 40 walkers.

•On Good Friday a procession of about 70 people from the churches in Cinderford left the Lidl car park after singing and prayers and wound its way upwards to the Triangle with the Rev Geoffrey Burn of St John's leading.

Singing, readings and prayer took place at the Triangle.
