THE hope that Mabey Co, at the Severn Bridge site, would establish an Apprentices'?School has been brought before the Assembly Member for Monmouth and the matter raised at the town council meeting. We hope for support to gain greater employment in the region.

There are two comprehensive schools where some doing their last exams may want to go into industry and we understand also that Mabey wants more workers at skilled jobs.

We hope that the Assembly Government may assist in this providing more for the young people in the area and scope too for some already skilled.

The following letter has been sent to the Assembly:

'Dear Assembly Member for Monmouth and the Minister Responsible for Industry.

'You will have heard with delight that Mabey of Chepstow have received a large order for wind turbines. At the last Chepstow Town Council meeting the councillors were asked if it would support two developments.

'One was the establishment of an Apprentice School at Mabey. The firm does need new workers. As I said at the town meeting, Chepstow does have two comprehensive schools. Those taking final exams may have good computer skills and prefer industry rather than university. Chepstow, as a town, needs employment in the town area hoping to cut down on commuter traffic which is the great problem with the A48 and bridge tolls. Here is a chance for youth training. I understand that the Assembly does give grants. They have, I think, been made for this year. What of the future?

'Also mentioned to the town council was the hope that a turbine be erected near the site. This needs careful thought, but if Reading can do it, why not the Mabey site? Perhaps local people would invest too, as hoped with the Drill Hall.

'A response to these two suggestions is awaited hopefully and with great interest, for the country needs manufactured materials for export as Mabey is able to do. I hope something will be supported by the Welsh Assembly.'
