MUSICIAN Terry Oldfield is returning to his former home to give a concert, at St Peter’s Church in Newnham, at 8pm on Friday (July1).
In aid of the Newnham Bells Restoration Appeal, the flautist, percussionist and composer will perform with his wife, singer Soraya Saraswati.
Andy Vivian, who is involved with the restoration appeal, said: “Terry began playing with his younger brother Mike in a band called Barefoot in the early 1970s. Mike Oldfield then shot to fame in 1973 with his recording of Tubular Bells.
“Terry continued to play with his brother and appears on three of his albums. From the early 80s, when he lived in Newnham, Terry gained a reputation as a film score composer, writing music for dozens of movies and TV programmes. For inspiration he increasingly turned to world music.
“A string of solo albums followed, fusing a very personal style of flute playing with the musical heritage of indigenous people from Africa to the Far East.
“Terry moved to Australia in 2001 where he met his wife. Their first joint album was released in 2011 and this year they have embarked on a three month European tour of concerts. Newnham is proud to be part of this tour, which includes cities such as Madrid, Alicante, Prague, Tallinn and Vienna.”
Tickets are are available at Newnham Post Office or online at www.newnhambells.wordpress.com/events/. All proceeds will go to the Newnham Bells Restoration Appeal.
