SUNSHINE and smiling faces could be seen around the Forest on Sunday as over 1,600 runners took part in the Rotary Club's Forest of Dean Trails Half Marathon.
The winner was Julian Hatcher who finished with a time of 1hr, 14mins, 36 secs. Local winners were Tony Marshall of Newnham for the men and Kim Mazzucca of Ruardean Woodside for the women.
Organiser Chris Hammersley said: "After last year probably having the worst ever weather conditions, this year I think we had the best, but that brought different problems.
"We had to make sure there was enough fluid available for everyone, which is not easy in an area with no taps.
"The day was a tremendous success and the Rotary Club is really pleased. We would like to thank everyone who was involved."
Lydney Tesco supplied the runners with bottled water and SmithKlein Beecham provided drinks for the end of the race.
Rotarian Bob Jenkins of Five Acres Garage provided the car which was bought partly using race proceeds and will be donated to chemotherapy charity Hope for Tomorrow.
The Sea Cadets, St John Cadets, the Air Training Corps and the Army Cadets helped to hand out water and supervise the car parking.
Mitcheldean Scouts and Guides gave out the medals, St John Ambulance and SARA provided medical and safety support and the Forest of Dean Motor Club provided the communications.
Parkend villagers and the Village Hall Committee allowed runners to leave bags in the hall and helped with car parking.
Chris said: "We are extremely grateful to the marshalls who do a terrific job. The runners said it was one of the best marshalled events they have taken part in.
"They said it was really encouraging when you were in the middle of nowhere to find a marshall cheering you on, supporting you and encouraging you."
The beauty of the area was also praised and many visitors said they had no idea what a fantastic place the Forest was.
