THERE was a big cheer last week as staff and children watched as work started at Longhope Playgroup to revamp the outdoor play area.

The Ofsted registered pre-school group has been running in Longhope for over 30 years and a rejuvenated play area is long overdue.

Caroline Murphy, Treasurer, said: "During the past 12 months we have raised over £8000. Playgroup has contributed £800, and we've secured funding from Grassroots Grants, Co-operative and The Langstone Trust. Many people have supported us, however we must thank Jason Watts of Watts Building Services 'a star' who is completing the work, Andrew Winterbotham from Rowntree Parternship and our local parish council. Their help, amongst others has been invaluable.

Initial works will be completed next week and will provide a new, flat turfed area, and an all-weather safety surface, provided by Sure Bond Surfaces.

Meanwhile, Playgroup staff and Committee are continuing to raise funds and seek donations, to enable them to provide more natural play equipment to encourage learning and activities outdoors.
