THICK, black smoke could be seen for miles around after a fire at an industrial on high ground above Lydney.

The fire at the Allston Grove sawmills site between Lydney and Yorkley started at 6pm tonight (Friday, April 12).

The fire broke out at the back of the site, far from the Lydney to Yorkley Road but close to trees.

Several fire engines were on scene for more than an hour with water being taken from a source near the junction with Old Dam Road, several hundred yards from the fire.

One by-stander said that they had seen the smoke from Christchurch near Coleford.
