I HAVE always thought it was the spendthrifts at County Hall and the Police Authority that think the taxpayers have bottomless pockets, and in cash terms this is still so.   However, in percentage terms the increase demanded by Lydney Town Council leaves them far behind.

I have just received the new demand for 2009-10 and see that everyone is requiring an increase between 2.5 per cent and 2.9 per cent.   Lydney Town Council wants a massive 11.4 per cent.   The same thing happened last year when even Dr. Brain 'only' demanded 5 per cent but Lydney needed 9.5 per cent.

What are they wasting our money on at so much higher than the official inflation rate? – B.C. Baker, Lydney.
