FRANK Johnson left this year’s 150th Bream Flower and Vegetable Show with his hands full after winning six trophies.

At one point the gardener from Clements End, near Sling, thought he was going to need to use the wheelbarrow he brought to the show to take his awards home.

Among his growing collection were awards for overall best exhibit, challenge cup for the heaviest cabbage, and collection of four different vegetables. He also scooped the Review’s heaviest onion trophy.

Secretary of the Bream Gardening Society, Jennifer Lang said: “Frank always submits an exceptional class of showings. He always does well at our shows – we look forward to welcoming him back each year.”

This year’s show saw an overwhelming number of people flock to Bream Rugby Club to celebrate its anniversary. There was also lots of children’s entertainment and music by the Bream Silver Band and the Pandemonium Steel Pans.

This year saw 107 classes with 500 entries; among those were primary school entries from Clearwell School who won best in show and Bream School who won the shield.

The fun went on well into the night as the club hosted an evening of mixed entertainment, which was also well-attended, and featured the Life of Riley and The Forest of Dean Male Voice Choir.

Two key members of the show were awarded a certificate of appreciation, which recognises their contribution to the show’s success. Programme secretary, Diana Standing and show secretary, Marina Lambert also received a bouquet of flowers.

Jennifer added: “Both ladies have worked hard over the years to make the show the success it is. It was a wonderful show of local vegetables, flowers and crafts.”
