In response to S Randell's letter whilst I agree that railings would be a very good idea on the A48 bridge in theory and as a parent would like to see both this AND a 30mph speed limit, railings would not be practical and may end up causing more problems.
Firstly they would have to be fitted which would mean closing a lane.
Secondly it would make the footpath narrower which could be a problem for pedestrians passing mobility scooters or those with pushchairs or prams.
Thirdly how many drunken people are going to try to balance on it while coming home from a night out?
As a driver I don't mind the 30 limit being extended to include the bridge what difference does a few seconds make to the driver? Yes damage can still be done if hit by a car at 30mph but it is the extent of the damage done that is lowered. Should an accident happen an injured child is better than a dead one!
