A TUTSHILL butcher's tasty chops, roasting joints and game have set his business on the road to becoming Best Butcher's Shop in Britain.

G and P Roser Ltd are through to the final of the prestigious national Meat Trades Journal competition, where they have to beat 17 of the best butchers in the kingdom.

Butcher Geoffrey Roser said he was very pleased to be chosen. "I was quite surprised because it was the first time we had entered," he said.

"However we did enter another competition 18 months ago in which we came top against 3,500 butchers in Britain, so it gave us a bit of courage! It won us a new Ford van."

He said he thought they stood a fairly good chance in the finals at the Dorchester Hotel in London on February 7.

His shop has been in business for 30 years. "There aren't that many traditional butchers like us left now," he said.

Six area winners will also be named on the day, Mr Roser's shop falling in the Welsh region by reason of postcodes. Attending the Oscars-style awards lunch will be a large number of guests from all sectors of the meat trade.

Each finalist's shop was visited by judges who assessed the quality of the meat on sale, the neatness, courtesy and efficiency of the staff, cleanliness and hygiene and the marketing, promotion and business plan.

The Top Shop competition is sponsored by several organisations including the Meat and Livestock Commission and the Worshipful Company of Butchers.
