THERE'S a wild butcher at work in the Forest.

Latest reports give his whereabouts as close to Mallards Pike, the beauty spot in the heart of the woods.

You could find traces of his work – skewered remains of food hanging in a tree.

But this butcher is a bird ... a great grey shrike.

Nicknamed by twitchers as 'the butcher bird', the shrike is a rare and unusual visitor to the Forest.

And together with an influx of another bird – the crossbill – twitchers are getting excited that this winter will bring some more rare sightings.

The Review's wildlife expert Ivan Proctor has been out in the woods to check out what all the fuss is about. Read his story in page 6.
