A CARTOON of the American president has netted its creator a national award.

Matthew Dixon from Caldicot was named Young Cartoonist of the Year in the under-30s category for his illustration, which depicts a piñata of a donkey being given as a gift to President Trump at the Mexican border. Inside it is full of Mexicans hoping to get across the border unnoticed.

Matthew, who graduated from the University of South Wales in Cardiff in 2017, collected the award from Martin Rowson, chair of the British cartoonists’ Association, at the Cartoon Museum in London, along with a cheque for £250.

Since graduating, Matthew has published his first book Rusty the Red Dragon and is working on his second called The Forest Railway Stories based on the Dean Forest Railway in Lydney, which will be out at Easter.
