A CAMPAIGN group set up a stall in Chepstow on Saturday (August 18) to call for a vote on the final deal agreed between the UK Government and the European Union and to gauge public opinion on the impact of Brexit on the local area.

Gwent for Europe were in the town’s Beaufort Square inviting people to sign a petition in support of national campaign, the People’s Vote, and campaign supporters were also asking people to make their feelings known on the current Brexit negotiations.

Gwent for Europe co-ordinator, Stephen Cocks, said: “We gathered over 200 signatures in two hours. We’re asking for a vote on the final deal rather than a rerun of the exercise carried out in June 2016.

“Recent polls have shown a major shift in opinion against Brexit in Gwent since the referendum and this was certainly reflected in the response that we received in Chepstow.

“We invited people to vote on our brexitometer – a simple device which asked people to place stickers against statements describing their view on Brexit in relation to its impact on the economy and on Wales.

“The verdict on our Brexitometer was overwhelming that Brexit would be bad for the economy, bad for jobs and bad for Wales. There was also overwhelming support for a People’s Vote. It would appear that, as people come to realise that many of the promises made in the referendum simply will not happen and as people begin to realise the implications of Brexit, they are turning against it.

“Nearly 280,000 people have so far signed the national petition to demand a vote on the final Brexit deal.”
