Chepstow U3A (University of the Third Age) started with just 30 members in December 1987 as a way of bringing older people together.
Among those celebrating at the castle was Mrs Dorothy Kneebone who was one of the original members of the group.
She said: "It was set up by Jean Airey of St Arvans after she moved here from London.
"At first we met in the bar at Chepstow Leisure Centre - Rosser Jones the manager at the time was very helpful in getting us started.
"She always said it was important to socialise and the U3A allows you do that.
"We learn together and I've enjoyed the last 25 years very much."
Mrs Kneebone cut a celebration cake with Chepstow U3A member and vice-chair of the national U3A trustees Beth Butler.
The cake was made by Dorothy Andrews of Chepstow U3A.
There are now around 40 groups covering activities from badminton to wine appreciation.
Chepstow U3A chair Ingrid Arntzen said: "U3A is for people who are no longer in full-time employment but who want to keep active in mind and body.
"We do not have outside tutors, we use the expertise of people in the group."
The celebration at the castle included songs from the Wyedean School choir – who received a standing ovation – and a drama group.
