A CLASSIC 120 years old steam engine is returning to the Forest of Dean this week.

The Midland Railway 'half cab' locomotive – number 41708 – was overhauled at Lydney in 1997.

Now based on the Swanage Railway, the engine is returning to work the Dean Forest Railway line until September 8.

Press officer John White explained: "In 1894 the Midland Railway loaned the Severn and Wye Joint Railway a similar engine to work in the Forest. These tall-chimneyed Victorian locos had removable backs to their cabs, making them look their age – they were originally introduced in 1878."

It is hoped the engine will be in steam most days during her visit.
