A FOOTBALL club could soon be sitting pretty – if planners give the go ahead for a new 250-seater covered grandstand.

Monmouth Town FC’s scheme for the riverside sportsground, which means in future they would have the facilities to play at Welsh Premiership level, has been backed by the town council.

Last year, the Kingfishers were relegated from Division 1 of the Welsh League because they couldn’t supply seating for supporters and visitors, as required by Welsh FA rules.

But the 1,018sq m box steel sheeting grandstand proposed, which will have four rows and be sited beside the current reserves team pitch next to the tennis club, would give the club a massive boost in terms of their future potential.

As part of the plan, the current main pitch shared with the town’s rugby club – which has a century-old unseated grandstand that was part of Monmouth Racecourse in the 1930s – will be used solely by the rugby team, with the footballers switching pitches.

“I want to see the team play in the Welsh Premiership and we need to have a facility to progress that high,” said football club chairman Brian Bond.

There are also two team dug outs on the opposite side of the pitch as part of the scheme.

The town council recommemnded approval at its meeting last week, on condition the stand’s colours blended into the surroundings.
