THE Government's League Tables for A-level results showed just how well the Royal Forest of Dean College has done locally and nationally.

An average point score of 22.2 for each of its A-level candidates placed it second in the table of South West colleges, beaten only by Plymouth College with a point score of 23.1.

Its score was also higher than any of the other Gloucestershire colleges.

In the national table of top FE and sixth form colleges, RFDC was placed 13th (out of over 400 colleges), with most colleges above it being specialist sixth form colleges (ie concentrating solely on A-levels).

RFDC's performance was also extremely impressive compared with most sixth forms in Gloucestershire, with only a number of selective grammar and independent schools doing better. It outperformed all comprehensive schools with sixth forms in the county.

College vice-principal, Mark Walton, said: "We knew our A-level results were excellent this summer but these tables put our achievements into perspective and show just how well we had done compared with other institutions.

"This is the culmination of three years of outstanding results which prove once again that this college can outperform sixth forms, grammar and independent schools in the A-level stakes.

"We are very proud that youngsters in the Forest of Dean can achieve this level of academic results which can match any in the country. Our students have worked very hard and are backed by a dedicated and experienced team of A-level teachers.

"Although we did not have a large number of high fliers (two students achieved four grade A passes), the majority of students achieved very solid results, in many cases exceeding expectations based on their GCSE results."
